Dear Legislators this is in regards to the proposed changes to the waiver program effecting HandiCrafters a workshop in Thorndale Pa. After reading the changes regarding appendices A through H I am very concerned. These changes would disrupt the lives of so many families. My son age 27 works at HandiCrafters and is very happy. He has so many close friends and is totally independent at work. The changes would take away that independence. He would need to have an aide with him in a public work place and that would be defeating for everything we have worked to achieve. The social component of HandiCrafters cannot be understated. There is so much more to work then just the money. He is safe, respected, doing meaningful work in a nurturing atmosphere. Where do you propose that people like my son find the same work experience. We live in a very urban community that is not always accommodating or safe for special needs people. These changes are very Pollyanna at best and outright dangerous. I personally would love to meet with anyone in authority to discuss these changes. The people who are making these life altering decisions need to visit HandiCrafters and observe the many challenges and the successful solutions that make places like HandiCrafters a vivable solution for so many families.

This letter reflects comments from many of the parents and caregivers I have spoken to regarding these proposed changes.
